William Johnson's report in the
Maryland Gazette, Annapolis Thursday, October 9, 1755
I was going to call this piece 'Chew'd Balls' but I thought better of it - basically this newspaper account of the battle is well worth perusing - a passage I've lifted to illustrate the quality of the information held in this paper
That it was rumour'd throughout the Camp, that the Balls made use of by the French were chew'd, and when extracted from a Wound, appeared surprizingly green; but upon the French General's being questioned about it, he declared he gave no such Orders, and if such bullets were fired, they must have come from the Irregulars of Canada only, and not from the European soldiers.
