French backpack

Here you can seen the set-up inside a French tent - notice the feet are put in the backpack - see below.
This study by Watteau from around the 1720s show the sac in use. It was waterproofed with linseed oil which gave it a light brown colour. These packs were generally laid aside for battles with a small contingent to guard them.
